The sugar should rise 20% by year's end, since the fall of production in India will generate global deficit, said Rubens Ometto, president of Cosan. World production of sugar should be less than demand at 4.5 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes in the 12 months to close up in September 2010, compared to a deficit of 7.8 million tonnes for the current harvest years, said last week the International Sugar Organization (OIA). The sugar futures contracts have a jump of 32% drawn by the prospect that the world consumption will be greater than production. "The sugar market is very promising for the coming years," said Ometto. "Prices should be in levels or better." The Cosan will increase production by 10% to 15% this year, said Ometto.

Cepea/Esalq - up to date sugar report
Sugar Quotations decrease in April second fortnight In the beginning of the second fortnight of April, even with the harvest progress, sugar prices remained firm. The support came from international demand for Brazilian product. The strong increases in ethanol values also boosted the sugar market in that period.Nevertheless, in the following week, Brazilian sugar prices backpedaled. The low domestic demand and the stocks sales of the 2008/09 crop pressed down values. Domestic buyers were waiting for product of the 2009/10 season. Regarding exports, buyers were interested in contracts, but they did not prevent the decrease of prices at the beginning of the harvest. In the second fortnight of April (from 15 to 30), the CEPEA/ESALQ Index (Sao Paulo state) for crystal sugar downed 2.66 percent, closing at 45.65 reals or 20.86 dollars per bag of 50 kilos on Thursday 30. Concerning price parity calculated by Cepea, the sugar remunerated 86 percent more than the anhydrous ethanol between April 27 and 30. In relation to the hydrated, the sugar advantage was 94 percent. In the same period, domestic trades (Sao Paulo state) remunerated 7 percent more than exports. According to Unica (Sugar Cane Agroindustry Association), the current Center-Southern crop, sugarcane production should reach 550 million tons, 8.9 percent more than the before. Sugar production in this region is predicted at 31.2 million tons, an increase of 16.6 percent. (Cepea – Brazil)Brazilian source CEPEA/ESALQ.

Sugar historical high prices
Sugar is in the historical path of highest price.
The Barclays Capital (BarCap) believes that the price rises in sugar recorded this year, is the largest one among raw materials. The institution ensures that this trend will continue in the near future to play a historic high. "One of the reason of this rise is the bad season crop this year in India and the estimated growth of demand which will not be fully satisfied by the two major producers in the world: India and Brazil," says BarCap in release. Furthermore, the forecast that oil prices will rise at around $ 80 will encourage the increased production of biodiesel with sugar cane.
